The Pogues, NY | March 15, 2007
On Thursday afternoon I decided to cash in some points to fly to New York and see The Pogues in New York city. Shane McGowan having taken a tumble off the stage on March 11th, the show at the Roseland Ballroom the previous night had been canceled so I was taking somewhat a gamble, but the Commitments were playing a few doors down if an option B was required. And it was New York city after all so I figured I could entertain myself for a few hours as my return flight was on Friday at 8am. The picture of the bridge and trees is on the way to the venue. This seems to be a new trend in NY I saw a tonne of trees that were so draped in a million little lights; very cute. The show was wickedly awesome. It did start with the whole band sans McGowan announcing they were going to start with an instrumental which worried me a little but then they brought him out, in a wheelchair! They started with a bang with Streams of Whiskey, Grace, The Broad Majestic Shannon, Turkish Song Of The Damned, A Pair of Brown Eyes... Reminded me of a JG show at the Duke in the olden days... It is a mystery how McGowan can actually remember the words to all the songs and yet not manage to utter one sentence that the crowd could could comprehend. It was actually kind of sad to turn around and look at all the confused faces trying to understand what he was saying just give up and laugh - at him, not with him. This man will surely drink himself to death. Awesome show all around though as they played all the favorites! The other pictures are of the departures board at Laguardia - not that clear but ALL flights were canceled and the airport shut down. And the snow falling outside as I sat in the plane that was to take me home for three long hours before they decided to cancel the flight... Thank God I knew people there and had $$$ since I had only packed a clean pair of underwear for my little 12 hour escapade. In the end I went to Hairspray and The Producers and did lots of shopping (you know, since I had no clothes I HAD to shop) and cam back with Skud who was driving back on Sunday night. Everything works out in the end :-)

correct. Although I am very jealous of the people who went to Great Lake Swimmers on Friday - I really like him, but as you point out I should hardly complain....

Ahhhhh....that brings me back to the summer of '88 or was it '87? It was Montreal...and the Violent Femmes opened for the Pogues and I was so close to Shane that his sweat was dripping on me...yes...yes...and I left that concert with so much blood (not mine) sprayed on my favourite sleeves-ripped-off Lucky Ron t-shirt that no bar in Montreal would let me in. T'was fun.
